Our Journey So Far

Hello!

We have decided to use this blog as a way of documenting our ideas, thoughts, decisions and processes as we start our career as a company. We felt that too often, pieces go out into the world without any context or shared knowledge; we want our audiences to understand and feel connected to the work we make. Hopefully, this blog will allow people to get a deeper insight into our work and creation, and will facilitate an open dialogue between us and our audiences.

We met almost 5 years ago, as freshers at Laban. Throughout our time there we crossed paths occasionally, but it wasn’t until we both auditioned for The Collective MA that we really became friends. This experience was pretty far out of both of our comfort zones, and set the tone for what would be a bizarre year ahead.

During the MA we lived together, and the highlight of this course for both of us was working with Lost Dog’s Ben, Chris, and Rachele (and baby Robin) on a piece called The Seagull(s). Unfortunately, Covid meant that this piece was never performed to an audience, but that’s a story for another day. This creative process brought out the best in both of us, showing us what else dance can be, and sparking a passion for physical theatre that has been growing ever since; it was a turning point for both of our artistic thinking, and our shared enjoyment of it is arguably what led to us creating Pelican Theatre 9 months later!

Graduating in the midst of a pandemic, opportunities for performers were pretty non-existent, and so we decided to make some opportunities for ourselves. Both feeling unfulfilled from the way our MA finished, and the compromises we had to make when creating our final pieces, we set out armed with ideas and drive to bring them to fruition.

We hope you stay along for the journey!
